UnifrakturMaguntia

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog

Font Details

UnifrakturMaguntia is derived from Peter Wiegel’s typeface Berthold Mainzer Fraktur, which itself traces back to a 1901 design created by Carl Albert Fahrenwaldt. While the original glyph shapes from Peter Wiegel’s font are largely retained, UnifrakturMaguntia incorporates modern smart-font technologies to render ligatures, including OpenType, Apple Advanced Typography, and SIL Graphite. An experimental aspect of the design is its typographic treatment of blackletter ligatures, distinguishing essential ones ‹ch, ck, ſt, tz› that remain even with increased letterspacing, from common ligatures such as ‹fi, fl› which separate when spacing is expanded.

UnifrakturMaguntia is specifically optimized for @font-face use on the web, combining standards compliance with a permissive license.

The font was first released in 2010 at UnifrakturMaguntia. It was developed in FontForge, the open-source outline font editor. OpenType features were added directly with FontForge, AAT features were integrated using ftxenhancer from the Apple Font Tools, and Graphite features were implemented via the Graphite Compiler. For further details about AAT and Graphite, see the Free Tengwar Font Project: Adding Graphite and AAT to a font.
